A night of IPL

After watching a lacklustre performance from KKR on YouTube, I walked into Xtreme Sports Bar in Banerghatta to capture the action of the RCB/DD match. The pub was choc-a-bloc with IPL enthusiasts sporting RCB jerseys or Red shirts. Also mingled in were a small, but very vocal legion of DD supporters.

As the match began, DJ Manny picked up everyone’s spirits with the Black Eyed Peas’ “Tonight’s gonna be a good night”. As the match progressed on the special Hi Definition screens at the bar, the energy just lit up. However, as Sehwag and Warner took the RCB bowlers to task, the crowd fell silent, except from the occasional cheer each time DJ Manny played the now well known IPL trumpet sound. By the fourth over, the small DD contingency were almost dancing with glee when Mithun bowled out Sehwag. The entire bar erupted into a frenzy of chants and dances. The dismissal of Gambhir in the very next over brought the entire house to its feet.

Soon the game saw alternating cheers from both sides as they tried to drown each other out. Every nook and cranny of the bar including the smoking area was full of people whose eyes were fixated on the screen. Although the second part of the match saw the RCB hopes and the fans’ chants drowning slowly, the spirit didn’t quite die. After a bunch of guys started the RCB chant, the crowd immediately revived and there was some pretty wild dancing (see photos) on the floor, even though RCB was obviously going nowhere with the match.

I took time to chat with Deepa Lobo, one of the wild RCB fans who was languishing around in obvious sorrow from the result. She however was pretty upbeat about RCB’s chances in the match. Looking at RCB’s current standing and form, I’m not that hopeful, but hey, it was a good night…who cares?! We’ll get ‘em next time!!!
